Lockport History
The Erie Canal runs directly through the middle of Lockport at the intersection of West Avenue and S. Transit St. In 1829, Lockport was established as a village as the community was centered on the locks bringing many immigrants to the area. Incorporated in 1865, Lockport has multiple properties on the National Register of Historic Places and is a popular tourist destination including sites such as the Canal Discovery Center, the widest bridge in North America, which spans the canal to the southwest of the locks, the Lockport Cave and Underground Boat Ride, and multiple annual arts and craft shows, festivals, and events.

Lockport has its own Lockport City School District and operates the Merritt elementary school, the Charles Upson elementary school, the George Southard elementary school, the Roy B Kelley elementary school, the Emmett Belknap intermediate school, the North Park junior high school, the Lockport high school and the Lockport high school West.

It’s like you stepped back in time learning the history of the area as well as the cave and underground boat ride, the Flight of Five Locks, and Erie Canal cruises.
The arts and culture program runs deep in Lockport with a visit to the 90-year-old proscenium-arch style theater, one of the most elegant show houses in the region. The parks and recreation department features multiple camps, adult and youth programs, as well as maintains multiple parks around Lockport.
Lockport is also home to multiple wineries and breweries perfect for spending a weekend afternoon. Check out Arrowhead Spring Vineyards, Spring Lake Winery, New York Beer Project, and the Honeymoon Trail Winery just to name a few. For heartier fare, Lockport is home to about 30+ restaurants including tried and true franchise favorites and locally owned eateries such as the Parkside Drive-in, Steam works Coffee, Tom’s Diner, and Steak, Stone & Sushi.
