Lewiston is known for where just Syed Tryon, a local Taylor and Deacon at the Presbyterian Church, broke the law and secretly escorted fugitive slaves to Canada and freedom as part of the underground railroad. Lewiston is known as Freedom Crossing and features historic tours, museums, and multiple historic buildings and communities. It’s known as the birthplace of Niagara as the river is the Western border of the village and is involved in the early commercial development of the Great Lakes region.

There are two universities within the border of Lewiston, the Niagara University and Niagara County Community College near the village of Sanborn in the town of Cambria.
Lewiston, coupled by the nearby Youngstown, are predominantly served by the Lewiston Porter Central school district. The district serves over 2000 students and was one of the highest-ranking school districts in Niagara County. The Niagara Wheatfield Central school district also serves part of Lewiston with the Niagara Wheatfield high school, Edward Town middle school, Colonial Village Elementary school, and West Street elementary school. There are also three private schools including the Stella Niagara Education Park, Sacred Heart Villa school, and St. Peter’s Roman Catholic school.
In 2015, Lewiston was ranked as the most affluent community in Niagara County and the eighth overall in Western New York. Lewiston is home to various businesses in commercial investments as well as entertainment venues and sporting events. The Niagara Falls country club is located in Lewiston, a private club and golf course within the Lewiston Heights neighborhood. There are three museums in town, the Lewiston Museum, the Castellani Art Museum, and the Sanborn Historical Society Museum.
There are several healthcare facilities in the town including the Mount St. Mary’s Hospital and the EmStar emergency facility.
Lewiston is the smallest city in the history of The Amazing Race to host the finish for an addition of the reality show.
Lewiston and Niagara River region festivals
There are three state parks in Lewiston including the Fort Niagara State Park, Joe Davis Park, and reservoir state park. There is one County Park, the Bond Lake Park, and several village and town parks including Acedemy Park, Colonial Village Park, Hennepin Gazebo, Kiwanis Park, Lewiston town Park, Sanborn Park, and Toohey Park. Each of these has its own amenities and there are several programs, summer camps, and youth and senior activities throughout the year.
